In a story truly worthy of April 1 but actually isn’t a joke, a new memoir has painted the tantalizingly brilliant picture of Queen’s Freddie Mercury smuggling Princess Diana into a gay club during the 80s.

Comedienne and all round fab girl about town Cleo Rocos has just published a memoir with the simply wonderful title, The Power of Positive Drinking. In it, one of the many vignettes that she recounts has Freddie Mercury and legendary funnyman Kenny Everett dressing Diana in an army jacket, cap and sunglasses for a night out at gay haunt the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, in South London.

Apparently the night began at Everett’s penthouse with Diana as a guest, before the night took an unexpected twist.

“Freddie told her we were going to the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, a notorious gay bar in London. Diana said she had never heard of it and said she’d like to come,” says Rocos.

“Now this was not a good idea. ‘It’s not for you,’ said Kenny, ‘it’s full of hairy gay men. Sometimes there are fights outside.’ This didn’t put her off in the slightest. Roco continued.

There was a huge irony at the centre of the entire plan – that two of the most famous faces in the UK at the time, let alone two of the most famous faces on the gay scene were engaged in a quadruple bluff, as the slightly odd androgynous looking pretty boy with them was actually the most famous of them all.

“When we walked in… we felt she was obviously Princess Diana and would be discovered at any minute.

“But people seemed to blank her. She sort of disappeared but she loved it.”

Rocos says regulars’ attention was diverted to her, Mercury and Everett and the princess was able to order drinks and enjoy the night out.

There’s a certain tragic lump in the throat in all the laughs though. Both Mercury and Everett died of AIDS related illnesses as they fell victim to the pre awareness years. Diana of course was heavily involved in AIDS charities before she too was cut down in her prime. Leaving Cleo Rocos as the only survivor of that memorable night down the Royal Vaxhaull.
